How to Reach Dholera: Every Route from Ahmedabad, the Airport and Upcoming Rail
⚡ Key answer

You reach Dholera SIR mainly by road from Ahmedabad, about 100 km to the northeast, using the 109 km four-lane Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway, which was reported inaugurated on 31 March 2026 and is operational. Reported travel time has been cut from about 2 to 2.25 hours to roughly 40 minutes to 1 hour, though sources vary. A dedicated Dholera International Airport is under construction about 20 km away, with operations targeted for 2026 but no firm date. A semi-high-speed rail link from Ahmedabad is planned with a 2030 to 2031 target. Until the airport and rail arrive, road is the practical route.

Dholera SIR sits on the flat coast of the Gulf of Khambhat in Ahmedabad district, about 100 km southwest of Ahmedabad city. For now the practical way in is by road, and that road story changed in 2026 with the opening of a dedicated expressway. An airport and a rail line are on the way but are not yet running. This guide walks through every route, the reported travel times, and what to expect on the ground, using only figures from verified sources. Where a time or status is reported rather than officially fixed, we flag it.

The short answer

Drive or ride from Ahmedabad on the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway. It is a 109 km, four-lane, access-controlled greenfield road built by NHAI, designed for 120 km/h and expandable to eight lanes. It was reported inaugurated by the Prime Minister on 31 March 2026 and is operational. That single road is the backbone of reaching Dholera today. The Dholera International Airport and a planned semi-high-speed rail link will add options later, but both are still being built.

By road: the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway

The expressway is the headline route. Before it opened, the trip from Ahmedabad to Dholera reportedly took about 2 to 2.25 hours on ordinary roads. After the expressway, reported travel time falls to roughly 40 minutes to 1 hour, though different sources quote different figures, so treat the low end as the optimistic claim rather than a guarantee. The road connects the Ahmedabad side to the Dholera SIR and runs alongside the wider trunk-infrastructure build.

A few practical points. The road is access-controlled, so entries and exits are limited to designated interchanges rather than every village turn. FASTag tolling is planned, but specific toll rates are not reliably sourced, so budget for a toll without assuming an amount. The cost of building the road has been reported at about Rs 3,196 crore for construction only, or about Rs 4,373 crore including land, the difference being a matter of what each figure counts.

On travel time: the widely quoted 40 minutes is the optimistic end. Real journey time depends on your start point in Ahmedabad, traffic at the city end, and conditions on the day. Plan for up to an hour and you will rarely be caught out.

By air: the airport under construction

Dholera is getting its own airport, Dholera International Airport, about 20 km from the SIR and roughly 80 km from Ahmedabad. Its first phase has a single 3,200 m runway rated Code 4E. As of mid-2026 it was not yet open. The original December 2025 target was missed, one reference lists December 2026, and as of 14 July 2026 the Union Aviation Minister was reported to have said the project was about 80 percent complete with operations likely in September to October 2026. None of these are a confirmed opening, so treat every date as a target, not a fact.

Until it opens, the nearest working airport for reaching Dholera is Ahmedabad. From there you take the expressway. Once Dholera International Airport is operational, flying into it and driving the last 20 km will become the fastest way in for long-distance and international travelers. For the full picture, see the Dholera airport entry.

By rail: planned, not yet running

There is no passenger rail into Dholera SIR yet, but a link is planned. An Ahmedabad (Sarkhej) to Dholera semi-high-speed rail line was reported cleared by the CCEA around 13 May 2026, with a reported cost of about Rs 20,667 crore, a roughly 134 km double line, and a target of 2030 to 2031. A reported journey time of about 45 minutes and a cited 220 km/h top speed both come from limited sourcing, so treat them as reported rather than settled. A separate Bhimnath-Dholera freight line was proposed years ago under the DMIC but has no current timeline.

A metro or MRTS connection from Ahmedabad to the SIR was reported approved around January 2021, but its current status is unclear and it may overlap with or be superseded by the 2026 semi-high-speed rail plan. For how these rail and transit threads fit together, see the Dholera metro and MRTS entry and the connectivity overview.

Practical tips for a first visit

  • Start from Ahmedabad. It has the working airport, rail and bus connections, and is the head of the expressway.
  • Give yourself up to an hour on the expressway rather than banking on the 40-minute claim.
  • Carry FASTag on your vehicle, since tolling is planned even though rates are not published.
  • There is limited hospitality on the ground, so plan food, fuel and a return trip within the day.
  • If you are visiting to see the project, the ABCD building and Activation Area are the anchor sights. See the Dholera visit guide.
Reality check: Dholera is a region being built, not a tourist town. Roads, signage and services on the SIR side are still developing, so treat a visit as a site tour rather than a city break.
